Iraqi Police Take down key Insurgent Leader in Rawah, Iraq
CAMP AL ASAD, Iraq (Sept. 2, 2006)
One of the most wanted insurgents in the Euphrates River Valley city of Rawah, Iraq, was killed yesterday by Iraqi Police during an independent counterinsurgency operation there.Sadam Shihab Ahmad played a key role in the coordination of insurgent operations and is also suspected of involvement in the beheading of a Rawah policeman earlier this year.
When Ahmad, along with another suspect saw police approaching their position in Rawah, the two suspects attempted to flee in a vehicle, but failed when police maneuvered to block their escape route.
A policeman ordered Ahmad and his passenger to exit the vehicle with their hands up. Refusing the order, Ahmad pointed an assault rifle at the policeman, who then fired several rounds in self defense, killing Ahmad.
Immediately after the shooting, Ahmads passenger exited the vehicle and threw a hand grenade at the policeman, but the grenade failed to detonate. The suspect was wounded when the policeman shot him in self defense.
The wounded suspect was medically evacuated to a U.S. military medical facility where he was reported in stable condition.
A third suspect was detained during the operation as well.
Yesterdays operation was a "keen example" of how the Iraqi Police is making progress in their capability as a police force, said Maj. Lowell F. Rector, officer-in-charge of the police transition teams in western Al Anbar, Iraq.
"The Iraqis are gathering their own intelligence, following up on leads, executing what theyve been taught by Coalition Forces and are catching the bad guys," said Rector, 42.
Rector, a Marine Reservist, also serves as a police officer in Columbus, Ohio.
The Coalition Forces unit responsible for training and mentoring the Iraqi Security Forces in Rawah is 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, Regimental Combat Team 7.
RCT-7 is the U.S. military unit responsible for western Anbar Province, an area more than 30,000 square-miles in size which stretches from the Jordanian and Syrian borders hundreds of miles east to Hit, a city about 70 miles northwest of Ramadi.
