The Netherlands, 7-9 November 2005:
The Earth Charter Initiative is pleased to announce an Earth Charter award, which will be presented for the first time during the Earth Charter+5 event. Projects that have occurred between 2000 and 2005 will be considered for recognition. Applications may be sent by individuals or organizations, and projects can be local, regional, or international in scope. Submissions should demonstrate outstanding work done with the Earth Charter in accomplishing at least one of the goals of the Earth Charter Initiative. This Award has been named to honor the memory of Juni Kalaw, the former Executive Director of the Earth Council.
Educational materials for the Decade,
based on the Earth Charter, launched in Costa Rica:
Costa Rica, 27 April 2005. Educational materials on teaching and learning about sustainable development with the Earth Charter were launched at the Museo del Nino in San Jose in the presence of the Minister of Education and the Ambassador from Japan. A Guidebook for Teachers, a Workbook for Students and a 2005 planner were produced for Costa Rican primary schools. This project was developed by the Earth Charter International Secretariat in collaboration with local institutions, and benefited from the endorsement of the Ministry of Public Education and the financial support of the Japanese Embassy.
It represents an important implementation step towards the
UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development,
which began in 2005.
